The 2026 Victorian Library and Information Award is open and in closes on the 21st of June. Ellen Coates, ALIAVic Convener, sat down with last year’s winner Pru Mitchell to talk winning the award, and why nominating your colleagues is so important.
1. What did winning the VLIA in 2026 mean to you?
The fact that colleagues nominated me and judges I really respect selected me means so much to me. It was incredibly humbling and proud moment.
2. Why do you think librarians should nominate their friends and colleagues?
As well as recognising and rewarding those who have inspired or mentored you, It is a fantastic opportunity to highlight and amplify the important work we do in libraries. At the awards I got to stand beside other amazing professionals Alice Anderson, Emily Johns & Ruth Silva and celebrate their inspiring work.
3. Have you enjoyed having Hush at your house, where did she live?
In my office (for security reasons). She was joined in October by another perpetual trophy I was awarded for the office footy tipping competition. I have to share a secret for potential future Hush carers that she is a sensory experience. It is a constant reminder as I walk into my office and the natural oil scent hits me. I am going to miss it.
4. Can you tell me one thing that came from winning the first VLIA?
There were various requests for articles and interviews but a highlight was an interview with Teacher Magazine which caused me to reflect on how some key points in my career have contributed to current work.
5. You came as Snuggle Pot to the Book Week Soiree where the VLIA was presented, is she a special favourite?
I really wanted a character from an Australian children's book, and you can't get much more classic than May Gibbs.
6. What do you think you'll be looking for as one of our judges in the 2026 VLIA?
People and activities that illustrate 'the why' of librarianship, and highlight the broad impact of our profession's core values.
7. Anything else that you'd like to add about the whole VLIA experience?
ALIA Vic put on a classy awards event and fun finale to Book Week, and I want to thank the committee and all the amazing volunteers in our profession, as well as record special thanks to my wonderful and supportive nominator and colleagues.
ALIAVic would like to thank Pru for taking the time to answer the questions, and for being a judge for this year’s VLIA. And don’t forget, there’s still time to nominate, and we all know so many amazing folks in library land who deserve to win. So get nominating!
